An Open Letter to Independent Artists

Posted by tpegonline on January 16, 2011

Cutting to the chase, independent artists tend to struggle because they operate in a vacuum — they don’t talk to other independent artists.

When you speak to others who are in the same position and have the same aspirations as you do, you can leverage each other experiences and combined knowledge to avoid pitfalls and make progress faster.

I want to introduce you all to a phenomenal technology that makes speed networking over the phone possible.

First of all, what the heck is “speed networking?”

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_Networking), this is what speed networking is:

Speed Networking is a method of meeting business contacts. Primarily, the practice involves multiple persons that gather in a single space in order to exchange information (1). Participants greet each other in a series of brief exchanges during a set period of time. During an interaction, attendees share their professional backgrounds and business goals. Networkers are generally seeking exposure to new markets and/or to expand their pool of vendors.

Speed networking is often referenced as a derivative of speed dating (2), the round-robin approach to meeting potential suitors first developed by Rabbi Yaacov Deyo in the late 1990s (3). Speed networking, a more recent concept, arose from the combination of speed dating and business networking and is thought to have started in the United States and, perhaps, simultaneously in the United Kingdom (4). Speed networking was first utilized during the U.S. economic downturn of the early 2000s and began rising in popularity as the decade drew to a close (5). Credit for applying speed dating concepts to the corporate world has been attributed to Tom Jaffee, a Columbia MBA alumnus and founder of a speed-dating network (6). Although the techniques for speed dating and speed networking can be similar – individuals paired or grouped together for the purpose of introduction – the practices differ in their end goals. Speed daters are trying to narrow down their choices by eliminating the unsuitable; conversely, speed networkers are trying to broaden their connections by increasing their exposure. (7)

It is my proposal that we take advantage of a great technology that allows us to participate in a speed networking event without leaving the comfort of our home or office.

All you need to do is to be logged onto the Internet and to be on a telephone.

You can literally do speed networking over the phone.

It is free. You don’t have to spend one red cent. No difficulties therefore no excuses.

To learn more about this technology, go to http://www.SpeedNetworkingOverThePhone.com.

We have a group where we will be doing regular speed networking over-the-phone events for independent artist.

Here is the link to the group, http://budurl.com/xxe2.

Do me a favor, if you have a Twitter, Facebook, or MySpace account, please send the following message to other independent artists that you may know:

Independent artists, let’s talk. Ever do speed networking over the phone? Learn how @ http://budurl.com/xxe2.

All the best,

Posted by tpegonline on January 10, 2011

CD Baby is the largest online distributor of independent music. CDBaby.com is a quaint little record store where it is hoped that you will discover your next favorite independent artist.

[In•de•pen•dent: (adj.) Not having sold one’s life, career, and creative works over to a corporation.]

If you’re a musician, comedian, or an author, CDBaby.com may be a good route for you to take. We’ll be interviewing the President of CD Baby, Brian Felsen, in this podcast.

This interview was conducted on Monday, January 10, 2011 @ 12:30pm EDT.

Please be inspired. YOU TOO can publish a book and/or your music and have it distributed.
