Our Firstborn Child Who Will Bring Us New Hope

This piece is a sonnet. According to About.com, you can identify a sonnet if the poem has the following characteristics:

• 14 lines. All sonnets have 14 lines which can be broken down into four sections called quatrains.
• A strict rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme of a Shakespearean sonnet is ABAB / CDCD / EFEF / GG (note the four distinct sections in the rhyme scheme).
• Written in iambic Pentameter. Sonnets are written in iambic pentameter, a poetic meter with 10 beats per line made up of alternating unstressed and stressed syllables.

Your mother was the apple of my eye

And the breath in my lungs when we first met.

The sun, moon, stars and all that’s in the sky;

All of the good tidings the blessed get.

I’m fortunate to have her as my wife,

Best friend and mother of our firstborn child;

A babe that we will raise to revere life,

Peace, justice, and harmony fighting wild

Base desires and avoiding the evil

That men do to each other and nature.

Balance rules in our house, not upheaval;

Order not Chaos is what we wager.

Child of the cosmos and seed on our loins

We love you more than ten tons of gold coins.
